In cooperation with Nestlé Health Science we spent several days presenting our solution to doctors from all over the Czech Republic and other neighboring countries. Discussing shortcomings in the health system directly with doctors is absolutely key to the possibility of making their work as efficient as possible. At first, it never occurred to him that this could be a promising startup with global ambitions. He and his wife, Carolina, just wanted to help doctors fight the coronavirus pandemic. They combined their knowledge - she as an anthropologist and he as a specialist in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The result is Carebotwhich, with the help of artificial intelligence and the knowledge of hundreds of thousands of X-rays, helps doctors to see better. He has made several successful investments and a trip to Czech and then foreign hospitals. Together with their friend and co-founder Carebot Matěj Misař, the Kvaks are now expanding their team and starting working on preclinical trials so that they can obtain medical certification.

Carebot participates in the new Caelestinus incubator!

A new startup incubator is starting in the Czech Republic, focusing on the hitherto neglected area of healthcare. His name is Caelestinus and behind him is Tomáš Studeník, who launched the domestic version of the FuckUp Nights concept in the Czech Republic. But perhaps there will be no further contributions to this series from his new project.

The connection between healthcare and technology and artificial intelligence is a promising field, but so far most incubators and investors have avoided it - for example, due to the high regulation of the field. And that is exactly what Studeník and three partners want to change.

„We are the only incubator in Central Europe connecting four completely different partners. We work directly with IKEM, the CTU Faculty of Biotechnology Engineering and the American company InterSystems, which finances the project," says Studeník. The fourth partner is its consulting company Insane Business Idea.

Among the voices that will be available to beginning entrepreneurs will be the representatives of the Carebot startup Matěj Misař and Daniel Kvak, who is in this year's Forbes 30 under 30 selection.

"We do not have decades of experience in the field, but we have gone through a rocket year with a lot of victories, but also stumbles and dead ends. And we will do everything we can to ensure that no one else has to go through them, "says Misař.

Together with Kvak, they developed a neural network model that helps doctors diagnose, for example, from a lung X-ray. "A year ago, investors here were very afraid to go to healthcare, now it is gradually changing and a new incubator can help," adds Misař.

At the end of the nine-month incubation program, in which startups can participate both physically and virtually, there will be a final presentation of individual projects at IKEM, where investors from, for example, Pilulka Lab, Credo Ventures and other international actors will come to hear ideas.

Artificial intelligence instead of a doctor? Machine learning is also gaining ground in medicine, and the Brno startup Carebot will probably push the boundaries in this regard.


Daniel Kvak is a doctoral student at Masaryk University in Brno, his field is artificial intelligence and machine learning. Together with his wife Karolína, who studies anthropology, they developed a neural network model through which they can safely select those that indicate pathology, including covid-19, on the basis of machine learning from X-rays.

"The Carebot application can mark chest findings almost immediately on chest X-rays," says the founder of the company, whose work has aroused great interest in professional circles. Carebot carefully, with machine precision and at the same time effectively searches for findings that the doctor in the hospital would not have noticed.

It can detect lung disease at an early stage and can help save lives. "We use the method of so-called computer vision, so it is not, in the true sense of the word, about comparing images. It is an algorithm of artificial intelligence of neural networks. We submit tens of thousands of images with annotations to the network, based on which the system learns to assess images. However, he does not compare them with any database of his own, "Kvak explains the principle on which Carebot works.

The doctor's tireless third eye. Pilulka Lab invests in Czech healthcare startup Carebot

It's been a couple of months since Pill and StartupYard announced the launch of Pilulka Lab with the aim of accelerating startups in the digital health space. The first acquisition is Carebota project that helps doctors make better diagnoses from more than just X-rays using artificial intelligence. 

Carebot can recommend to the doctor in seconds with machine precision what findings are present on chest X-rays and also mark the foci of disease. The app thus significantly improves the quality of diagnoses, can detect findings that a doctor might not notice in a hospital practice, and can help save lives as well, says Carebot CEO and co-founder Daniel Kvak. 

Pilulka Lab focuses on supporting healthcare startups from Central and Eastern Europe working in the areas of artificial intelligence, blockchain, medical data, healthcare and active living support. That's why Pilulka, through its accelerator, decided to join Carebot, which will now go through its three-month accelerator program.

"Pilulka is synonymous with innovation in healthcare. That's why we want to support projects that transform the segment and bring better care to people in the region. We have analysed over 50 companies from 14 countries over the past few months and are in closer discussions with several. We are delighted that Carebot is the first among the projects to join the accelerator. For us, it meets all the parameters to be extremely successful and to says Martin Kasa, Co-founder Pilulka.cz a Pilulka Lab. 

"Joining Pilulka Lab is a major milestone for us in recent months. Their experience in the healthcare segment and expertise in the business is unquestionable and we are delighted that they will help us in our rapid growth and expansion. Carebot will be able to start helping in hospitals and clinics not only in the Czech Republic, but also around the world," confirms Matěj Misař, co-founder of Carebot.

Carebot is being developed with doctors for doctors. Patients and the entire healthcare system will benefit from better diagnoses, company officials say. Improving the quality of diagnoses can mean catching diseases at an earlier stage and a higher chance of a patient's recovery. Once certified, the Carebot app will be able to be implemented in any hospital and practice locally and globally


The company's ambitions go even further. "The analysis of the chest images is just the beginning. We already know that we can scale our solution to almost any screening that is done, not just static ones. One day, Carebot will also help with diagnoses from CT scans, MRIs or colonoscopy," says Daniel Kvak.

Pfizer Healthcare Lab: Carebot in the TOP5 startups from Central Europe

In the first year of the Pfizer Healthcare Lab project, in which Pfizer is looking for start-ups from Central and Eastern Europe offering innovative solutions for healthcare, four projects from the Czech Republic and one idea from Latvia were successful. Out of ten projects from all over Europe, Pfizer chose Carebot for a possible future collaboration. "This gives us the opportunity to collaborate with the most innovative and one of the largest healthcare companies in the world. This is another confirmation for us of the right direction of our project and we believe that with such partners we can significantly contribute to better diagnoses from X-ray images worldwide", agree Carebot founders Daniel Kvak and Matěj Misař.

Deloitte Impact Stars: Carebot was named one of the 50 fastest growing technology companies.

If the world had not faced covid-19, Daniel Kvak and his wife Karolina might have tackled bone age prediction. Instead, they focused on the lungs, using artificial intelligence to develop a system that can tell in seconds from an X-ray whether a patient is healthy or has covid, pneumonia or any other lung finding, including a tumour.

He is a PhD student at Masaryk University in Brno, working on machine learning, she is a forensic anthropologist. That's not the beginning of the advert, but the beginning of the story of the Carebot startup. There is still a third to the party, Matěj Misař, formerly a journalist specializing in healthcare, now Carebot's CEO. The word was given when all three of them realized that this idea has a much bigger scope and that it will not be "just" about covid, but that it can completely help the whole healthcare sector.

"Imagine that every radiologist and every doctor has a system on their computer through which they look at X-ray images. We put our model directly into their system. When he receives a photo of a patient's lungs, he clicks a button and Carebot immediately recommends what the patient has on his lungs and where it is," explains Matěj Misař.

Carebot uses state-of-the-art machine learning and computer vision technologies, or works on the basis of deep neural networks. "We present the software, the neural network, with images of the lungs and at the same time annotations, i.e. what the patient's findings are. This makes Carebot able to learn to recognise individual findings based on this knowledge alone. It has been trained on hundreds of thousands of images of women, men and children that have been annotated twice, i.e. evaluated twice by different doctors," explains Daniel Kvak.

We trained our neural network on a large dataset of individual findings, age groups, geographic locations or gender, taking into account standing or lying patients, but most importantly also the possibilities of how to scan and how to scan. This is also crucial for other countries where we encounter images of varying quality. Carebot can handle these as well.

Carebot's ambition is certainly not to replace the doctor - he will always be there to diagnose and treat patients. And doctors realise this, they perceive Carebot positively. As Daniel Kvak says, radiologists are probably the most open to new technologies and enjoy innovation.

The aim is to significantly improve the quality of diagnoses using artificial intelligence. And to assist an overloaded system where radiologists are not available, for example during night shifts or in small hospitals. It also plays a key role when it comes to prevention. "Any finding that is not detected early enough can subsequently develop into something much bigger. A sick patient then costs the healthcare system more money," recalls Daniel Kvak.

One of the key things that sets Carebot apart from the competition is its ease of implementation. "The fact that we are able to plug anywhere, into any radiologist's or doctor's computer, into any system, in a very short time. Telemedicine is on the rise, we have also created a web application that doctors can use in the same way," says Daniel Kvak.
